Study Description and Purpose

Brazos County is studying the feasibility of a new roadway that would connect the eastern areas of Bryan and College Station. Should the study determine a new roadway is needed, it would enhance local and regional connectivity for future East Brazos County as the area continues to grow. 

The goal of the study is to preserve a corridor that works for the travel needs of the community while honoring the rich character and agricultural aspect of the area that benefits the community. Corridor preservation is a vital step in transportation planning and works to minimize impacts in the future as the area continues to grow. 

The proposed new alignment would connect at SH 6 east of FM 2818 in Bryan, cross SH 30 south of Elmo Weedon Road, and connect with William D Fitch Parkway in College Station. The study is funded through Brazos County’s voter-approved Transportation Road Improvement Program (TRIP) 2022 Bond. Only the feasibility study is funded—should the study determine a new roadway is needed, the County will need to identify additional funding for subsequent phases.

Need and Purpose of Proposed New Roadway

The proposed new roadway is needed because there is a lack of north-south connectivity and roadway capacity for east Brazos County to meet future local and regional mobility needs. 

The purpose of the proposed new roadway is to improve north-south connectivity, mobility, and roadway capacity to accommodate traffic volume growth associated with new and future planned development.

Study Area Update

The study area was adjusted in response to public feedback following the November 2024 public meeting.

The study team has worked to contact all property owners potentially impacted by the refined alignment concepts within the newly identified study area to communicate this change with them directly. 

Project Development Process to Date

The project development process begins with a feasibility study, which evaluates the need for a new roadway while also assessing the environmental, social, and economic impacts of the potential roadway before advancing with subsequent phases. It can take up to several years for subsequent phases of project development to occur and is dependent on project need and available funding. 

This study identified a viable study area based on the conceptual alignment identified by the Bryan College Station MPO through the Master Thoroughfare Plan in 2017. From there, the team developed multiple alignment concepts while considering several factors including existing utilities, private and publicly owned properties, environmental features, area topography, and engineering standards. These alignment concepts were shared with the public in November 2024 for review and feedback. 

Since then, the team has refined the initial alignment concepts based on continued environmental evaluations of the area, identified constraints, and public feedback received. 

Proposed Roadway Configuration

The County and the study team recognize that East Brazos County has traditionally been rural and residents value the rural character of the area. The design of the proposed roadway would be constructed with rural engineering standards in mind while providing options for travelers of all abilities. 

This roadway configuration could be modified as needed for improving the safety and countryside setting of the area. If built, the roadway would be constructed in phases and additional lanes could be added should the travel demand increase.

Next Steps

Following the second public meeting and technical analysis, a preferred alignment option would be selected for further evaluation. The study team expects to hold a third public meeting in late 2025 to share the preferred alignment option for community feedback. Should the study determine the roadway is needed, the study team would hold a public hearing and seek environmental clearance in 2026. 

If an alignment is selected and the roadway location is identified, any new developments will be restricted from building within the corridor location. Individual property owners can still use their land within the corridor location however they wish. 

Public Involvement

Community input and working with property owners are a priority for the County and essential to the study process. Brazos County recognizes the need for the study and the impacts a new roadway location would have. We are committed to engaging with the community and keeping you informed throughout this process. Notifications of study updates and how to participate will be shared through the project webpage, email campaigns, mailers, and media. Comments are welcome and considered at any time.

What has the study team been up to since Public Meeting #1?

Since the first public meeting in November 2024, the County and the Study team have:

• Reviewed and analyzed 1,375 comments from the first public meeting to inform the study
• Met with stakeholders in the community to address questions and concerns
• Refined alignments based on environmental and technical analysis and community feedback
• Met with property owners impacted by alignments in the expanded study area
• Conducted traffic analysis and modeling, and further environmental evaluations
• Planned for Public Meeting #2

Right-of-way Acquisition
